Onam

Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities. According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. Onam is celebrated in the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham). This corresponds with the month of August-September according to Gregorian Calendar. Carnival of Onam lasts from four to ten days. First day, Atham and tenth day, Thiruvonam are most important of all. Popularity and presentation of rich culture of the state during the carnival made Onam the National Festival of Kerala in 1961. Elaborate feasts, folk songs, elegant dances, energetic games, elephants, boats and flowers all are a part of the dynamic festival called Onam.

Onam is the biggest and the most important event of BAI as well and we have been holding this event for the past 7 years and every year since the members increase the event gets even bigger.

Event History

Shravanotsavam 2016 was held on Saturday 24th September 2016 at Hillcrest College Theatre. We have been fortunate enough to be supported and helped by a lot of members of Berwick Ayalkoottam in organising this wonderful Onam event . More than 500 people were present for this event and it was truly a splendid display of skills by all the performers. We were so humbled and encouraged by some of the feedback received from members and guests claiming they have experienced the best Onam celebration in Melbourne after attending multiple celebrations elsewhere. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped to make this event a great success.

Onam 2015 was conducted at Beaconhills college auditorium in a grand manner. There were about 350 people participated in the event and there were quality programs performed by the members.

Berwick ayalkoottam has conducted Onam in a wonderful manner every year since 2009. The members grew from 50 to 400 and the event got bigger and better every year.

Berwick ayalkoottam has conducted Onam in a wonderful manner every year since 2009. During the early years most of the members were performing on any one of the programs.
